Rikke Hinsch
- nurse at a medical department
To become a nurse is surely one of the best choices I have made in my life. I have a job where I can constantly develop professionally and personally and where the time between idea and action is not that long.
Nurses play an active and important role in the patients’ life. That is why talking to patients is such an important part of basic nursing – and a part that I really like. It is allowed to laugh and cry together with the patients and often this is exactly what they need. Sometimes it is a big challenge to shift between different moods. It requires that you can take in and relate to the difficult feelings that many patients experience.
At a medical ward a large part of the job is to make sure the basic needs of patients are met. Those needs are e.g. personal care, diet problems, medicine and changing of dressings. This gives you the opportunity to get to know the person behind the patient and this is exactly what nursing is about.
At a medical ward we have patients with many diagnoses – from terminal cancer patients to young people with metabolic diseases and elderly people with pneumonia.
This is a professional challenge and it gives you the oppotunity to learn something new, which makes it exciting to go to work.
The changing working hours suits me fine. I appreciate the possibility of going on e.g. six months leave. This means I can travel for a longer period or try to work abroad.
