Ann Boje
- nurse at an emergency department

The emergency ward is open 24 hours and we see all types of patients: children, young and old and both medical and surgical patients. The job is very unpredictable and varied. The job requires you to act quickly and that you have the ability to make decisions. At the emergency ward we quickly see the result of our work and the contact to each individual patient is usually very brief.

The job is primarily receiving and treating people with many types of conditions from sprained ankles, insect bites and stomach problems to burns and serious injuries. It can also be people in crisis, e.g. relatives of persons who have died suddenly and unexpectedly, who need care.

The emergency ward work closely together with the other hospital departments, the police and paramedics. The paramedics call to inform us of the number and type of patients they are taking to the emergency ward. Our job is to decide on the necessary treatment of acute patients and make sure the relevant doctors are present to receive the patient.

The job requires overview, experience, professional skills, ability to work under pressure and to cooperate with different staff groups.

I like to be confronted with new patients and challenges every day and that is why the pace and the variety of the job at the emergency ward is ideal for me. It gives me great satisfaction to see that my job matters every day.
